Towbar Electrics Explained: 7 Pin vs 13 Pin

Towbar Electrics: What You Need to Know

When having a towbar fitted, one of the key decisions is the electrical connection. This powers the lights on your trailer or caravan and, in some cases, provides additional functions.

7 Pin Electrics

The 7 pin socket provides the basic lighting functions needed for towing a trailer. It covers indicators, brake lights, tail lights, and fog lights.

13 Pin Electrics

The 13 pin socket is the European standard and provides all the functions of a 7 pin, plus additional features including a permanent power supply, charging for the caravan battery, and reversing lights.

Dedicated vs Universal

Dedicated electrics are vehicle-specific and work with your car's onboard computer. Universal electrics are a more affordable option but may not be compatible with all vehicle systems. We always recommend dedicated electrics for modern vehicles.
